The Day The Secret Died
How high I flew. How fast I fell.
About ten years ago I was stuck in a job I didn’t love in a city I had grown to hate. After a few unproductive weeks in therapy, my therapist asked me a question that would change my life. For an entire day.
“Have you ever heard of The Secret?”
I love a good secret. A speakeasy here, a secret menu there, a cat who wears a bow tie for no apparent reason. Secrets are mysterious, and discovering them is a special kind of thrill. I was down for any secret she wanted to share.
The Secret, it turned out, was nothing more than a self-help book. But I bought the book and read it that day because it was easier than doing actual work on myself.
And here is the big reveal of The Secret: The energy we put out into The Universe comes back to us in magical ways. All we need to do is put positive energy out there, ask The Universe for what we want, and all of our wildest dreams will come true.
Conversely, sometimes people are shitty and send negative energy out to The Universe, and I guess that’s how they get UTIs.
What I wanted for my life was pretty simple, I think. I wanted to be confident, creative and loved by everyone, even New Yorkers. I wanted to become an accomplished writer and in the meantime I…
